Belonging and Committing PDF Print E-mail

At Milwaukee Mennonite Church, we invite all people to join us as we focus on forming our lives around Jesus’ life and teachings. We do not have “membership” in the traditional sense; rather, individuals signal their belonging and commitment to our congregation simply by active participation in the life of the congregation. Being a part of Milwaukee Mennonite Church also means being connected to the larger bodies that Milwaukee Mennonite Church is affiliated with:  the Central District Conference of Mennonite Church USA, Mennonite Church USA, and Mennonite World Conference.  Through these bodies we are connected to Christians and to people of faith both locally and worldwide.

Each year we have a Covenant Celebration Sunday, typically at Pentecost, where we affirm our individual and corporate commitments to Jesus and to each other, and we recommit to the vision God has given us. At this service we celebrate baptisms (though one may choose to be baptized at any time during the year), and those who have already been baptized may participate in remembering their baptisms. Also as part of this service we invite people to commit themselves to living out the vision of Milwaukee Mennonite Church in the coming year.  This invitation is for all who are drawn to active participation in the life of Milwaukee Mennonite Church based on their lived experience in the congregation and as described in the vision statement and the litany of commitment.  This is also one of the times in the year when we extend a special welcome to new participants among us.  All are invited to share their stories of participating in this vision and their challenges for the congregation.

Any person belonging to this congregation is invited to participate in our gifts discernment process.  We encourage people to volunteer their gifts, time, and resources as God leads them.  We recognize that the gifts we have bless not only our congregation, but also our homes, neighborhoods, workplaces, the city of Milwaukee and its surrounding communities, and the world.
